La Vida del general Sucre apareció en 1850, veinte años después del asesinato de Antonio José de Sucre. Ello sucedió debido a que un colaborador anónimo y malintencionado del periódico El Comercio de Lima puso en duda los méritos del héroe de Ayacucho. Había tergiversado los hechos. En respuesta Domingo de Alcalá, sobrino por vía materna de Sucre, recogió declaraciones de los testigos de la Batalla, a fin de que explicaran la actuación del Mariscal.
