Breve y famoso ensayo en el que se recorre la historia de la invencion y de la difusion de las maquinas del tiempo, es decir, los relojes, primeros aparatos de precision que, en sintonia con la exigencia del Occidente medieval y moderno, escanden los tiempos de la vida social. El autor describe desde los talleres medievales, hasta el laboratorio de relojes creado a finales del siglo XVII en el palacio imperial de Pekin.

Las distintas aportaciones que forman este libro fueron presentadas en el Simposium Proyecto Humboldt 2002-2004. Las primeras intervenciones que recoge son una detallada exposición del proyecto y sus principales logros. Las ocho restantes son una muestra significativa de interesantes contribuciones al estudio de los viajeros científicos que pasaron por, o estuvieron en Canarias estudiando alguna rama específica de la ciencia y de las relaciones que el proyecto Humboldt tejió con diferentes instituciones europeas tomando como referente específico a las Islas Canarias.
