La historia de Nayarit muestra rasgos muy particulares del occidente del país, justamente allí donde el altiplano "se deshace en tierras húmedas y calientes y se despeña en barrancas interminables" para dar paso a la diversidad característica dominante del clima que define una serie de pequeñas regiones distintas entre sí. Esta obra prolonga el Estudio histórico del estado de Nayarit, de Everardo Peña Navarro, publicado entre 1946 y 1955, y es resultado de numerosos libros y artículos que han desentrañado el devenir de la entidad.
