En Hamlet, príncipe de Dinamarca, lo visita el espectro de su padre, muerto hace poco. Éste le revela que fue envenenado por su hermano Claudio y su esposa para usurparle el trono y asumir como rey. Le pide a Hamlet que lo vengue. Sorprendido, el joven realiza varias acciones, por las que el nuevo rey lo envía al exilio y luego a la muerte. El plan fracasa y Hamlet regresa, enterándose de que su amada Ofelia ha muerto ahogada.
