Alejandro Morales es un importante escritor chicano contemporáneo que sigue intrigando a lectores. Este estudio explora cómo las novelas de Morales (Caras viejas y vino nuevo, La verdad sin voz, Reto en el paraíso, The Brick People, y The Rag Doll Plagues), en conjunto, reconstruyen la historia del chicano en los Estados Unidos y las implicaciones sociales que resultan de este intento. Por medio del estudio del cronotopo del encuentro, la recuperación de la historia y el compromiso social, la narrativa de Morales examina los elementos que forman la «esencia chicana.» Es importante comprender esta «esencia» para que el chicano sobreviva en una sociedad que históricamente ha negado no solamente la contribución chicana sino la de muchas minorías étnicas no europeas.
