By the time he met General Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn, his courage was legendary. Though he soundly defeated Custer, public outrage at the defeat brought thousands of cavalrymen to the area, where it took four more years before the brave chief would surrender. He was forced onto a reservation where he was later killed when police attempted to arrest him.
