La historia y los historiadores en el México antiguo recoge la lección inaugural que ofreció Miguel León-Portilla en su ceremonia de ingreso a El Colegio Nacional en 1971. En esta edición se publica por primera vez de manera independiente. En él, León-Portilla reflexiona sobre la historia y el quehacer de los historiadores y en la manera en que estos conceptos pueden entenderse y aplicarse en las culturas prehispánicas. Para ello rastrea evidencias de un esfuerzo consciente por la conservación de la memoria en los pueblos prehispánicos y su lugar en esas sociedades.
