Esta obra se ocupa de las transformaciones en los modos de dominación colonial y resistencia étnica durante el siglo XVIII en la provincia de Chayanta, una zona habitada predominantemente por comunidades indígenas en lo que hoy es el norte de Potosí, Bolivia. En ella se trata de la persecución inquisitorial padecida en tierras portuguesas y en Venecia, del traslado a Andalucía y de la inserción socio-económica de unos refugiados religiosos. Otros aspectos centrales son la dispersión y ramificación de la familia en una amplísima geografía por razones comerciales y su ascenso por la escala social hasta el umbral mismo de la hidalguía.
